About Evan Young

The boxing news and tip site BoxingForecast.com is the brainchild of Evan Young. Evan is an attorney with a background in municipal law and real estate, but his life-long passion has been the sport of boxing. He has followed it closely since his teen years, attending hundreds of boxing matches and fights, devouring information on the sport, prowling local boxing gyms, befriending fighters, keeping up with the latest boxing news, and even managing a promising middleweight contender for a while.

Like many others of his generation, Evan's passion for the sport began by watching Muhammad Ali in the 70's. He was fortunate enough to grow up in Brockton, Massachusetts - the "City of Champions" and home of Rocky Marciano - during the rise of "Marvelous" Marvin Hagler. Luckily, he was able to attend many of Marvin's bouts from his early club-fight days all the way through his many title defenses.

Evan certainly never intended to develop a gift for picking boxing winners, but over the years, as a result of watching - live or televised - virtually thousands of fights, and reading everything he could get his hands on, he has developed a keen sense of how the history and characteristics of two boxing contestants - and the circumstances surrounding a fight - will all come together to produce a predictable outcome.

Naturally the ability to forecast the results of prizefights would be an important resource for making wagering decisions. There are plenty of "experts" offering wagering advice on the most popular sports, but boxing, by contrast, seems oddly neglected. Those who do offer boxing "picks" tend to focus on high-profile fights only, and often their analysis is clouded by the "hype" surrounding the fight.

So to satisfy the demand for in-depth, unemotional boxing analysis, and informed, rational wagering advice, Evan created BoxingForecast.com, a fee based Internet boxing news and opinion service offering information and in-depth analyses about and forecasts boxing matches. The uniqueness of this site lies in its frequently contrarian viewpoint. Attention is often focused on contests in which the site's analysis goes against popular opinion. Moreover, commentaries are presented on bouts taking place all over the world in all weight classes – not just the high-profile events with which most sports fans are familiar. In this way BoxingForecast.com hopes to raise the level of awareness of boxing as a sport worth following.

Evan's strategy for winning against the odds wasn't developed overnight. It came from many years of studying every factor that can influence the outcome of a prizefight – knowing the advantage of one style over another, carefully analyzing each fighter's weight, record, conditioning, training, management, age, and lifestyle, even allowing for the possible bias of referees and judges. His special gift is for recognizing when the odds-makers get it wrong, and the betting lines do not reflect his expectations – or, to put it plainly – when the underdog is underrated or when the favorite is overrated.

This is what Evan calls recognizing "value" in a fight. His strategy is similar to "value-investing" in the stock market. If you can find undervalued stocks you have a greater chance of making a profit. Likewise, if you can recognize underrated boxers, you can be a frequent winner against the odds. (See "Why Boxing Betting"). But the word "frequent" is key. No one can predict the future perfectly. Evan's picks will win often – but not always. That's why it is important never to risk too much on a single fight. So - also like stock market investing - he would never recommend risking more than a small amount (less than 10%) of any wagering portfolio on any one contest. (See "How to Bet Boxing").

To test his skill against the odds-makers, Evan has established a hypothetical wagering fund (See Track Record Details). Whenever he makes a boxing pick, he applies his recommendation to the fund, as if it were real. This way you can track the hypothetical results achieved by following his advice.

"I've known Evan about 15 years. We've always talked the fights, and he can sure pick'em. He really knows his stuff. I'd be confident with him as my handicapper.” - Goody Petronelli, Trainer of Marvin Hagler

September 5, 2010

We had a solid, overall winning weekend riding the wave of 2 underdog plays in Glasgow, Scotland on Saturday.

Stephen Smith was able to nip tough John Simpson and brave 4-1 underdog Ricky Burns was able to shock Roman Martinez in a grueling see saw battle. Great win for Burns, copping the WBO super featherweight crown in the process.

New picks coming later in the week with an interesting schedule of bouts to review.

"I've never seen a more consistently successful tipster in any sport in all the time I have been betting. Most of them seem to promise a lot and never deliver or start out well and then go downhill rapidly. Your selections though just keep getting better every week.” - Peter H. - U.K.
"I have been betting on boxing for quite some time but I have completely stopped making picks myself, im a sucker for the favorites and have been getting much much better returns from your picks, its all about the longer term and anyone can see from your results that in the long run its been excellent.” - Mike L - U.K.

Smith catches up with Crawford, stops him in the 9th
Antwone Smith scored a 9th round stoppage over previously undefeated Henry Crawford on Showtime Friday night at the First Council Casino, Newkirk, Oklahoma. Smith was only a slight favorite to win and I know many thought Crawford had a very good chance to win. I picked Smith, believing he'd he too busy and consistent for Crawford.
