Fight Summary:
140 pound title holder Tim Bradley moves up in weight to take on undefeated welterweight Carlos Abregu in a 12 round bout on Saturday night. The bout will be televised on HBO.

The way I see it:

Bradley is a real throwback fighter. He works hard in the gym and wants to challenge himself in his bouts. He’s short, but he’s very quick and in impeccable condition. He works extremely hard to make improvements and is getting better in every outing.

He’s not the biggest hitter but he’s physically strong and can grind guys down. He does, however, score quite a few knockdowns. He really was impressive in his last fight when he thoroughly dominated his best opponent, Lamont Peterson, through 12 rounds. Peterson is a very good fighter but Bradley had an answer and then some for the tough challenger.

Abregu is a knockout specialist from South America but he nearly flopped in his US debut against David Estrada. He looked good early but tired late and barely survived. And he suffered another close against Irving Garcia where he was dropped twice but scored the KO. And against Richard Gutierrez, he was dropped again but scored a win.

Abregu does have quick hands and some power. But he leaves himself wide open and has shown he can be badly hurt. And he does fatigue as fights carry on. And even though Bradley isn’t a KO puncher, he hits with authority and he’s always looking to press.

I expect that Bradley will land pinpoint punches through the wild attack of Abregu. And when Abregu gets hit cleanly, he gets hurt. Bradley is by far the best fighter he has seen thus far. And Bradley prepared smartly for this move up in weight with strength training and hard work. He’s looking forward to the challenge.

I find it hard to imagine someone with Abregu’s flaws will make it to the final bell against a ball of fire like Bradley. I expect Bradley to finish the job between 6 and 10 rounds.
