Six Betting Tips for Success
Sports Betting Tip #1: Bet on a sport where information can give you an edge. If you don’t know a good deal about the sport you are betting on, or if you can’t obtain usable information that might give you at least a small advantage, then you are not betting – you are gambling – and you may as well throw your money away on roulette.
Sports Betting Tip #2: Don’t bet on evenly matched contestants unless the odds are lop-sided. If, in your view, the contest is a match-up of equals – and the odds are even too - then the outcome is no more predictable than a coin-flip. Again, this is not a wagering – it’s just gambling.
Sports Betting Tip #3: Look for value in a wager. If you are going to risk your hard-earned money, make sure you have a chance for a decent payback. So keep your eye on the odds, and stay away from bets that offer returns too small to justify your risk. It’s better to risk a small amount for a big return than a big amount for a small return – and then only if you have reason to believe you have a fair chance of winning.
Sports Betting Tip #4: Be patient! You only need to win a little more than 50% of the time to be successful. But that means at least 4 out of 10 of your bets will be losers. It takes mental discipline to resist the urge to throw a big wager on a favorite in an attempt to make up your losses.
Sports Betting Tip #5:Be prepared to lose, and don’t bet more than you can afford to give away comfortably. If you can’t be honest with yourself about the risk, and about how much you can truly afford to wager without hurting yourself and your loved ones, then you may have a gambling addiction, and should seek help.
Sports Betting Tip #6: Bet on Boxing! Because of the way the odds are structured, no other sport offers you a better chance of making money. See my comments at "Why Boxing Betting?" .
Applying these sports betting tips to my boxing betting program
First of all, my goal is to be as well informed as possible about every bout I handicap. Most of my day is devoted to pouring over boxing records, reading boxing news, viewing fight films and videos, searching for clues that will tip me off to the likely outcome of an upcoming fight.
Many, but certainly not all, of my picks will be underdogs, because I’m looking for betting leverage by finding underdog wagers that have at least a chance of being successful. I sometimes recommend favorites too, but for finding betting value, underrated challengers and overrated favorites are the meat of this website.
I may also make some picks without a high level of confidence in the outcome(see my Sports Betting System). I do this when I believe the odds-makers are wrong, and that there may be value in the fight. An example might be an underdog who is + 1000 but should, in my view be more like + 300. It may still be unlikely that the underdog will win, but not as remote as the odds would indicate. Although it’s not a strong play, some value exists here. If you were to bet $100 on this fight and win, you would gain $1000.
But notice that on fights like this I will risk only a very small percentage of my fund – sometimes as little as one-half of one percent – because I know the chance of winning is slim. Very often, one of these “long shots” will come in, and more than make up for the losses leading up to it. I’m patient, because I know that in the long run my efforts will be profitable. And since my risks are small, I can afford to be patient.
On the other side of the ledger, I almost never recommend prohibitive favorites who seem certain to win. I may give my opinion on the outcome of such fights but to strongly recommend such a wager would be a disservice to our members. Besides, you don’t need me to tell you that a skilled world champion is likely to beat some club fighter in a tune-up match. For example, let’s say a fighter is – 2000 to win the fight. That means you would have to lay $2000 to win $100. In that scenario it’s most likely that the favorite will prevail, but it would still be a foolish wager because the small potential gain is clearly not worth the high risk. However, on such fights it’s possible that some decent "proposition bets" may be available, such as the manner of victory (KO vs. decision) or the over/under in rounds, etc.

If you can afford the time to do the research, you too can be successful betting on boxing, and you don’t need me. But because there are so many factors at play it becomes a very complex, time-consuming activity. Also – experience counts. I’ve been doing this along time. I’ve had my ups and downs, and I’ve learned from them. So the recommendations you get here go far beyond simple statistics. That’s why BoxingForecast.com is such a valuable resource.
